Why Teacher-to-Child Ratios Matter More Than You Think
May 27, 2026 · The For Kids' Sake Team

When families compare child care options, ratios can sound like a technicality buried in a licensing document. In reality, the number of children per teacher quietly shapes almost everything about your child’s day.
What a ratio actually is
A teacher-to-child ratio is simply how many children one caregiver is responsible for. Ohio sets minimum ratios by age — more teachers for infants, fewer as children grow. Those minimums are a floor, designed to keep children safe.
But there’s a big difference between meeting the minimum and going beyond it.
Why staffing above the minimum changes the day
At For Kids’ Sake, we staff above the required ratios on purpose. Here’s what that buys for your child:
- More individual attention. Smaller groups mean teachers can notice the quiet child, encourage the hesitant one, and truly see each kid.
- Faster, calmer responses. When a baby needs comforting or a toddler needs help, someone is right there.
- A calmer classroom. Fewer children per adult means less chaos, more connection, and a more peaceful environment for everyone.
- Safer transitions. Hand-washing, diapering, outdoor play, naps — the trickiest moments go smoothly when there are enough hands.
Ratios and learning go together
Early learning happens in relationships — in conversations, shared books, and the back-and-forth of play. When a teacher isn’t stretched thin, there’s room for the rich interactions that build language, confidence, and curiosity.
What to ask
When you tour any center, ask two things: What ratio do you keep? and Is that the minimum, or above it? The answer tells you a lot about how a program values your child’s experience.
